Busy day

We started off at the Royal Tyrrell Dinosaur Museum. It was a fascinating museum and really well done. We spent a long time looking at many fossils and marvelling about these large prehistoric creatures.

This is an actual fossil found in the tar fields in Fort McMurray. It took one scientist 5 years to work on it and put all the fossil fragments together.

Tim says even the friendly dinosaurs have sharp teeth!
We even met my friend Tammy and her family this morning!
We then visited a pedestrian suspension bridge in Rosedale. It was originally built for miners to get to work as they initially had to take rowboats. Early to the mid twentieth century, coal mining was a major industry in this area with 139 mines.

Next we were off to visit the Atlas Coal Mines.

Would they make good miners?

This structure is called a tipple. Coal was sorted and loaded from here on to train cars and later trucks.

We visited the “hoo doos”-crazy rock formations!

Finally, we finished our day with supper at the “Last Chance Saloon”. An old hotel from a coal mining town named “Wayne”. During it’s heyday, there were 2500, now there are 31!
